Animal Medical Centre Referral Services

What is AMCRS

AMCRS was established in 1990 to provide advanced veterinary services to small animal patients referred by other UK veterinary practices. It offers a multi-disciplinary referral service from two centres, the original site in Manchester and the purpose built centre in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire pictured left.

History

The founding partners, veterinary surgeons Pip Boydell and Rachel Pike, recognised the lack of truly multi-disciplinary referral services and took action to remedy the situation.

At the time of starting, the practice was based in a large semi-detached property in Chorlton, Manchester, and this still houses a significant part of the practice. From the outside it is not obvious, but a vast amount of effort went in to improving and extending these premises. Among the facilities added as an immediate priority were dedicated radio-shielded operating facilities with filtered positive pressure ventilation to minimise the risk of airborne infection and modern hospital kennelling.

These premises soon became inadequate and a further property was acquired in the vicinity, the Veterinary postgraduate Centre opening in 2000 to provide educational and additional clinical facilities including a new ophthalology consultation and diagnostic suite, dermatology consulting rooms and the fully equipped dental operating suite.

Even with this extra space the Manchester centre was becoming congested with up to 12 clinicians clamouring for space at the same time. As there was no further space for expansion locally. and a significant number of clients travelled across the Penines to AMCRS, a major investment and building plan was conceived to provide a brand new centre on the opposite side of the Pennines. The Yorkshire branch was opened in Thurnscoe in 2002, providing a complementary and partially overlapping range of services to the Manchester centre.

The Thurnscoe centre had the space necessary to permit a major addition to the AMCRS's services, on-site MRI scanning.
